I have a good collection of DVD’s – about a hundred – and I don’t want to have to go back to zero in a year or so and replace them all with Hi-Def or Blue Ray equivalents.Is there a device that can convert ordinary DVD’s into the new HD DVD format to save me and others that trouble? They’re both digital – could you ‘rip and burn’ maybe?
Simply………….NO
Although having said that many HD players will “Up-Scale” an existing standard DVD and may display it at a slightly higher quality than you are used to.
You can however play any DVD on a HD DVD and (presumably) a BlueRay player, rather more interestingly you can also convert HD DVD to play on a normal DVD player !!!

Once you’ve done that you can use pretty much any DVD ripping/copying software………..I used DVD Fab………….to rip from the HD DVD title and convert it to DVD, I burned back to a DVD 9.0 Dual Layer to retain the 100% quality of the original and it plays beautifully on a standard player.

Did Apple rip me off on my Macbook?
I ordered my Macbook from the phone, because I had a question about a student discount, and the guy I was talking to said I could just go ahead and order it directly.
He talked me into going with the 2GB, with a double-layer superdrive, opposed to the one gig combo drive that I had originally planned to order that was 200 dollars less. As I’ve known, I should be able to burn dvds from iDVD with a double layer superdrive.
I’ve had my Macbook for a few days, and just opened iDVD and recieved a message that said I cannot burn a dvd using iDVD because my Macintosh “DOES NOT HAVE A SUPPORTED SUPERDRIVE”.
Did the guy I was talking to rip me off and send me a 1GB Macbook for the price of a 2GB? How can I check this from my Macbook to see what kind I have? Shouldn’t I be able to burn a dvd with my superdrive? What should I do?

Yes superdrives do burn dvds.
Have you complained to apple? They need to know about that guy.
If you have had it less than 30 days, you can send it back and get your money back.
Oh, Apple did not rip you off. Did you order it from Apple? If so call them Monday and tell them what you just told us.
